Vince Dhimos, Editor-in-Chief at New Silk Strategies (2016-present) The only appropriate answer to this at this time is nobody knows. However, AIIB (Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank) is only one of many things that the US hates about China. The Shanghai gold exchange is another thing. The BRI is the biggest thing. But none of these things are at the heart of the problem. Back in the 80s when the US Congress was debating whether or not to grant China Most Favoured Nation status, one congressman happened to mention that free trade with China would help drive a wedge between Russia and China. I have always suspected that was the real reason for MFN status. The fools in the Establishment — think tanks, government, Kissinger, etc — believed implicitly that they could buy China into the Western sphere of influence and that China would turn its back on Russia. But after the turn of the millennium, and after the US showed its true face as a bully that did not shrink from bombing millions of civilians into smithereens to get its way with all the nations in the world and be the global cop forever, neither Russia nor China was interested in being pals with Washington. It turned out that neither country had a price and that this notion of morality and common sense actually had survived the 20th century in the most unlikely places. This righteousness on the part of Russia and China really infuriated Washington, which felt that it had invested hugely in corrupting China and they had betrayed it by staying true to their principles and not turning their backs on each other and the world. To the misfits in Washington, not having a price is unforgivable if they see you as part of its grand plan and has invested heavily in you. The most unmistakable signs were joint military and naval drills and Russia’s statement that it considered Iran and ally, and the icing on the cake was the 3-way naval drills involving Iran, Russia and China. Washington felt betrayed and wanted big time revenge. The trade wars and the killing of Iraninan folk hero Soleimani were a signal that the US was willing even to destroy what little was left of its reputation and even its economy — because all economists were horrified at the trade war and warned of dire consequences. But unlike Russia and China, the US was clearly willing to sink its own ship just to get revenge. Which would of course give the US a motive to start an epidemic in China and Iran, if that is what it did. Again, no one knows or will ever know for sure. But we do know that the hegemon will not shrink from shooting itself in the foot to get revenge. I wrote a post on this possibility at Quora, with a translation of an interview with a an ex UN expert on bio warfare. https://www.quora.com/Was-coronavirus-created-by-the-USA-to-destabilize-China-in-the-midst-of-trade-war/answer/Vince-Dhimos
