Is Israel building a case for war with Russia?

By Vince Dhimos

It is becoming clear that Israel wants war, and it could be a world war against not only Iran and Syria, but also against a nuclear power, Russia. Following the unprovoked attack on Iranian-staffed bases in Syria and the shootdown of an Israeli jet as it was attacking Syrian territory, the Times of Israel published a chilling editorial by Mark Greenberg declaring:

“The Russians, Syrians and Iranians are war criminals and should be brought to justice.”
Now the Times of Israel does, of course, post the de rigueur disclaimer that the editorialists it publishes do not necessarily represent their viewpoint. But no one was holding a gun to the publishers’ head demanding that they post something that could sway its mostly Israeli and US Jewish readers to support a world war against a nuclear power like Russia, but that is exactly what they did.

At the same time, they published this misleading article stating:

“Israel’s military attacked 12 Syrian and Iranian targets in Syria on Saturday in a new wave of strikes it described as a ‘large-scale’ attack, following exchanges of fire earlier in the day sparked by an Iranian drone infiltration from Syria.”

Did you spot the lie? The drone (which by the way, Iran says was not theirs) did not penetrate Israeli space. It entered the part of Golan Heights illegally occupied by Israel. People with an elementary knowledge of geography know that the Golan Heights is part of Syria and that the UN has repeatedly demanded that it leave. It is there only because the US supports this illegality, reminiscent of the words of the prophet Jeremiah: The prophets prophesy falsely, and the priests exercise rule at their own hands and by means of the prophets. And My people love to have it so!.

Another, more subtle, lie by a UK-based propaganda arm is also repeated at the same site:

“The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a Britain-based monitor of the seven-year civil war, said the earlier Israeli raids had targeted several military bases in the east of the central province of Homs. It said the bases are used by both Iranian and Russian military personnel deployed in support of the regime.”

Another lie, and Westerners buy it without question: Russia is not supporting any “regime.” This is a two part lie: Firstly, Syria’s government is duly elected and democratic (unlike the Saudi dictatorship that no one in the West calls a regime, though they would if they were honest). Secondly, Russia is defending the Syrian people, not Assad, against terrorists that Israel has, BTW, never opposed. Putin has repeatedly declared that he will support Syria regardless of who is president. Now Israel – whose defence official said ISIS was an ally – is, by killing anti-terror fighters, clearly siding with the terrorists.

Here is the story of ex Israeli defence minister Bogie Yaalon admitting that there was a communication channel between Israel and ISIS. The author, fearful of reprisals, posted this line only in Hebrew under the video link: “Former defence minister Ya'alon confirmed for the first time the existence of a communications channel between Israel and Da'ash in Syria.”

Elsewhere, Yaalon is quoted as saying “Iran is worse than ISIS.” (BTW, Trump constantly repeats the lie that “Iran is the biggest state sponsor of terror,” which shows where the US stands).

Worst of all, Israel has rewritten international law by declaring that it will not “tolerate” Iran’s presence in Syria. Syria is in its legal right to invite Iran or anyone else but with US support, Israel don't need no stinkin’ international law.

So why is Israel being so bold?

Because in his speech to AIPAC Trump pledged allegiance to Israel:

Trump’s opening lines: “I speak to you today as a lifelong supporter and true friend of Israel. I’m a newcomer to politics but not to backing the Jewish state.” [my highlighting]
and
“We will totally dismantle Iran’s global terrorist network, which is big and powerful – but not powerful like us.”

Sounds like war! Iran does not have a global terrorist network. Saudi Arabia has that and all informed people know this. It is hard to believe that many Americans took Trump to be a peacemaker based on his criticism of the Bushes and their war-making but without examining his belligerent rhetoric against a military partnership including a nuclear-armed member.

And note that he did not vow to keep the peace on behalf of the Jewish people, only to support the “Jewish state,” regardless of how much its policies might endanger the Israeli people.

This shoot-down of an Israeli jet was the fulfilment of my tweeted prediction that sooner or later, Syria would shoot down an Israeli jet. Now my following statement is not exactly a prediction, but it seems reasonable to assume it:

Based on the above-reported news that there were Russians present at at least one of the bases attacked by Israel, Russia will no doubt harden the air defences of bases in Syria where its personnel work in advisory positions. That means S-400s and Pantsirs and that means almost 100% precision in its targeting of attacking Israeli jets. After all, the Russian people have already learned of the downing of a Russian jet in Idlib province, and they will also know that Russian personnel were working at a base bombed by Israel. The Russians will eventually demand more protection for their personnel in Syria and that will mean an escalation of Israel-Russia tension (we can assume Putin will inform his “friend” Bibi of any hardening of air defences).

Any military response by Israel will involve the US.

After all, Trump vowed at AIPAC that there would be no daylight between the US and Israel. Sounds like officially Israel’s wars are also US wars. Even if they’re nuclear.

You ok with that, American friends?
