Peace organizations are headed by a motley assortment of creatures. While many, like we at NSS, feel that the world needs world powers that provide a counterweight to each other, there are still a few 60s hippy do-gooders who advocate beating swords into ploughshares even before the bad guys are defeated, leaving the hegemon with all the deadly arms and disarming the rest. I suppose they believe that if one nation – especially Russia – leads the way and stops making weapons, the rest – including the country that destroyed Libya, Iraq, Afghanistan, Kosovo etc. and tried to destroy Syria – will just receive a spiritual message from on high and do likewise.
A perfect example of this mind-set was when, in the midst of the US War on Terror, with plenty of A-10 Warthog bombers deployed in the area and awaiting orders, the Obama administration decided to just stand down and allow thousands of ISIS terrorists to drive their white Toyotas with heavy-calibre machine guns mounted thereon, into Syria and mix with the population, making it necessary in the ensuing years to bomb whole communities and cities, as the US did in Raqqa, to eliminate them. By its inaction, America was aiding and abetting the terrorists. This refusal to fight terror wholeheartedly – or rather, this pretence of fighting terror -- was not an Obama-specific phenomenon. It is a constant of US foreign policy, the motivation for which is described in our three-part analysis:
Without the above-described “peaceful” approach to the “War on Terror” that the Obama administration adopted – ie simply letting the terrorists have their way at the crucial moment when they were clustered entering Syria and presented a perfect target, hundreds of thousands of lives would have been spared. Instead, in order to subsequently eliminate them after they had blended with the civilian population, the Syrians and Russians, and occasionally the US-led coalition (when they were not busy bombing the Russians and Syrians), were forced to bomb whole communities and conduct urban warfare. But of course, the official Western position is that all of these casualties were the fault of fall guy Assad.
The aging flower girls will no doubt be horrified that we at NSS write in detail about new Russian weapons as we learn of them, but we firmly believe that without these weapons, Syria would be overrun by terrorists and Iran would be a giant glass panel. The Russians think likewise and are convinced their military developments are the only thing standing between the world and WW III.

The Shtorm Aircraft carrier will tilt the balance in three regions of the world
Rossiyskaya Gazeta May 5, 2018
The planned Russian aircraft carrier of the Shtorm project will become the world's first marine carrier for fifth generation aircraft, which will give the Russian Navy a strategic advantage over any other fleet. In addition, the presence of a Russian ship of this class can seriously change the balance of power in three regions of the planet, which are currently of interest to the world's leading powers, ie. the Arctic, the Mediterranean and Southeast Asia.
"If Russia's military-political relations in the Persian Gulf are strengthened, as is now happening, the presence of a large aircraft carrier in the Mediterranean will be a symbol of support for Russian allies and will ensure the safety of cargo delivery for them," the authors of an article published in the journal Military Watch state.
The aircraft carrier "Storm" will be adapted to work in the Arctic Circle. Its arrival in the Arctic will give the Russian military an indisputable advantage over all other countries claiming natural resources hidden under the ice. If the aircraft carrier becomes the key for them, it will undoubtedly pay for its development.
The third region where the emergence of a new Russian aircraft carrier can dramatically change the alignment of forces is the Asia-Pacific. The situation there is not easy: China is increasing the power of its navy to control the disputed islands, and recently deployed DF-21 anti-ship ballistic missiles, which seriously worried the US military, since they are intended to destroy aircraft carriers. The US and its allies have to demonstrate their strength by conducting naval exercises in the surrounding waters. In this boiling cauldron, the emergence of a Russian aircraft carrier with a potent grouping of the newest aircraft is a serious argument in favour of China.
By the way, the Celestial Empire may become a buyer of Russian aircraft carriers. In China, there are already two aircraft-carrying cruisers of the Soviet model and deck fighter J-15, a copy of the Su-33. With the help of fifth generation Russian aircraft Su-57 Beijing could significantly expand the capabilities of ship-borne aviation. Another potential buyer of the Russian aircraft carriers is India.
The project of the prospective multipurpose aircraft carrier "Shtorm" was first unveiled at the St. Petersburg Naval Salon in 2013. Designed by the Krylov Center, the ship, with a displacement of 100,000 tons, will be able to take on board up to 90 aircraft and helicopters. The nuclear power plant will remove restrictions on the range of navigation, and the ice class will allow the ship to enter the Arctic. The flight deck will have two trampolines and four electromagnetic catapults. An aerofinisher will assist in landing the aircraft.
